The UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has invited tech startups from Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya to enter the Unicorn Kingdom Pathfinder Awards (UKPA).
According to UKPA, the award is now open and looking for companies specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), connected and automated mobility (CAM) technology, cybersecurity, and digital trade solutions.
He noted that the move is part of the UK’s broader strategy to cement its status as a global tech hub, leveraging its $1 trillion tech sector.
According to UK Investment Minister, Dominic Johnson, “These awards are a fantastic opportunity for tech scale-up companies to join the UK’s thriving $1 trillion tech sectors.”
He emphasized the awards’ role in the government’s broader commitment to facilitating business growth, benefiting from the UK’s skilled workforce and supportive regulatory environment.
The Trade Commissioner for Africa, John Humphrey, highlighted the significance of African innovation, remarking, “The African start-up landscape is now front and centre as the world focuses on African know-how and innovation.”
Humphrey praised the continent’s young businesses for their role in offering innovative solutions and creating jobs, expressing enthusiasm for the awards’ potential to bridge African startups with the UK’s vibrant tech ecosystem.
UK said,Winners will receive a tailor-made program to help scale their businesses in the UK, including industry meetings, VIP events, and expert business growth support. With the UK boasting more unicorns than France and Germany combined, this award represents a unique opportunity for African startups aiming for global expansion.
