One of the major factors that normally demoralize student is the issue of forgetting what they have studied. You can imagine student studying for 6-8 hour per day after which he or she can’t even account for up to 20% of what he or she has studied. Generally, experiment has shown that:
-You can remember 20% of what you read.
-You can remember 30% of what you hear.
-You can remember 40% of what you see.
-You can remember 50% of what you say.
-You can remember 60% of what you do.
-And finally, you can remember 90% of what you read, hear, see, say and do.
Well from the above statistic we can see if one wants to retain a good amount of what he or she has studied, then one has to evaluate himself carefully to know his weakness and how to tackle it. Below are different reasons why student forget virtually 80-90% of what they have studied.
Lack of Revision: like the popular adage which says that “it is not how far but how well”, one of the most common mistakes that student make is continuous studying without going back to revise what he or she has studied in order to know the retention rate. No matter how bulky your notes or text book is, always make sure that you have read and review what you previously studied before moving on to the next book.
Weak Attention: well a student can forget what he or she has studied if the person does not give a close attention to that which he will like to remember. Always refresh your memory with that which you don’t want to forget.
Interference: Research has shown that some of our daily activities which do not relate to academics do interfere with what we have studied or learnt in school. Always make sure that your academic life has a large portion of your time, as this will help you to fully concentrate in school.
Wrong Food: it has been discovered that food plays an important role in our memory. There are certain foods that affect our brain, such as food that contains caffeine; they temper the circulation of blood and decreases energy. Therefore if you want to increase your retention rate, you should eat more of alkaline food. Anyway water melon, mangoes, vegetable, banana and raw honey also boost the brain.
Lack of Sleep: Sleep is very important because it is vital for learning and memory. Lack of sleep affects our health. Sleep deprivation can decrease a student cognitive ability to focus during reading and lectures.
