In a move to secure individual privacy in this digital age, the Nigerian Data Protection Commission has signed a statement that enunciates the appointment of David Daser as the newest member of the Nigerian Data Protection ( NDD ACT) drafting committee.
The statement signed by Dr Vincent O. Olatunji also states that the inauguration of Mr Daser as a full member of the committee would be held on the 4th of September 2023.
David Daser, the former Director General of Plateau State information communication development agency PICTDA and founder at nHub, has played an enormous role in promoting the protection of Nigeria’s data privacy.
The appointment letter commended his actions and also stated that the appointment was an act of appreciation for his unwavering commitment to protecting and securing data privacy in Nigeria.
What does the Data Protection Act mean?
The Nigeria Data protection Act 2023 was signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the 12th of June, 2023.
The Act provides a legal framework that ensures the protection and regularization of the personal information commission. It is aimed at safeguarding and making provisions for the privacy and rights of Nigerians.
The utmost objective of the act is to;
Safeguard the fundamental rights, freedoms and the interests of data subjects as guaranteed under the supervision of the Nigerian Republic constitution,1999 and strengthen the legal foundations of the Nation’s digital economy.
Furthermore, it advocates for Lawfulness, fairness and transparency as the three requirements of the data protection Act.
